Frequently asked questions
Everything we are asked most often about the beacon, the app and the account.
The beacon
The beacon communicates by satellite, independently of the mobile network. It keeps working in desert areas with no cellular coverage. When needed, a press on the SOS button sends your position to the people you have named.
The beacon will carry a battery rechargeable through a USB-C port under a sealed cover. Battery life will be measured on the first prototype: as long as no unit has ever run, no figure can honestly be given.
Not yet: no physical enclosure exists to date, the design is under way. Resistance to heat, sand and knocks is a central goal of the design, but nothing has been built or put to the test. We will say so here as soon as a prototype has been tested.
SOS and safety
An alert will go out with your position, and the emergency contacts saved in the app will be notified. A red LED is planned to show sending in progress: that hardware behaviour has not been observed yet, for want of a prototype. From the app, however, the chain through to the text message is tested end to end.
The emergency contacts you added to your account yourself: family, travel agency, or anyone else you trust. You can save several, in order of priority.
Yes, through the app's Family circle: you invite a relative with a code, and they can see your alerts read-only. Once the beacon exists, they will also be able to see its state, battery and status, without ever being able to change it.
Account
Yes, one account for both. Log in with the same credentials on the site and in the app: your emergency contacts and your history stay in step.
No payment system is in service and no money is taken. A rechargeable credit system is planned for sending satellite alerts, but it will only come into service with the first beacons.
